Cricket history returned
By Lachlan Ellis Moorabool News Historic donation: Brad Wootton donated the trophy late last month, which was first presented to his great great grandfather, ‘Mr J R Wootton’. PHOTO: David Leach/BALLAN CRICKET CLUB LACHLAN ELLIS A HISTORIC donation has been made to a Moorabool sporting club, with a trophy more than a century old generously given. Brad Wootton is the great great grandson of the Ballan Cricket Club’s John Richard Wootton, whose name is engraved on a trophy from the 1894-95 cricket season. Last month, Mr Wootton kindly gave the trophy over to the club, which President David Leach said had “come completely out of the blue”. “Brad dropped in one day and asked if we’d be interested in the trophy. Once I saw that it had been presented to the Ballan Cricket Club, I said of course we are. I asked him where it had been, and he said it had been in his shed for as long as he could remember gathering dust…so he gave it to us,” he told the Moorabool News. “No-one knew it existed. I thought, what a lovely gesture. The club itself goes back to the 1870s we believe, though there’s not a lot known until basically 50 years ago. A lot of history of the club has been lost, and the club may have not existed for certain periods, but no-one can tell us.” Engraved in the base of the trophy are the words: “District Trophy, Presented by Dr Corry, won by Ballan Cricket Club Season 1894-95, Presented to Mr J R Wootton as a token of esteem”. Club historian and photographer Chris Thom looked into the trophy, with his research finding it was tendered to Mr J R Wootton at a farewell banquet on 22 February 1895, “on the occasion of his departure from Ballan after a residence of more than six years”. According to the Ballarat Star Saturday dated on 23 February 1895, “the trophy was made by Philip Ashberry & Sons Ltd in Bowling Green St (near Kelham Island), Sheffield, England”. John Richard Wootton died a few years later, on 18 November 1898 at Mooroopna Hospital, from “Bright’s disease of the kidneys”. The Ballan Cricket Club is now brainstorming how best to display the 129-year-old trophy, and Mr Leach said Mr Wootton would of course be invited to any unveiling event for the trophy display. “We’re trying to find a prime place to put it, we want to do it justice as you can imagine. It’ll be a prominent place somewhere, we’ve just moved into the new rooms and we’re still trying to sort a lot of things out. If we have an official unveiling, it’d be nice if someone from the Wootton family could be there,” he said. “We’re stoked to receive it. As President, it’s a fantastic gesture by Brad, we’re super appreciative.” |
A bit of history, for the Ballan Cricket Club, turned up today. ( Saturday, 20th January 2024)
Brad Wootton called into the game at Ballan with a trophy that had been awarded to his Great, Great Grandfather and has left it in our care. The inscription reads; "District Trophy Presented by Dr Corry won by Ballan Cricket Club Season 1894-95 Presented to Mr J R Wootton as a token of esteem" Many thanks to Brad with this historical item which will be treasured and honoured. He also thought that it should be displayed as best we can rather than just leaving it at home. 129 years has passed since this was presented. BCA Helmet Policy
BALLARAT CRICKET ASSOCIATION POLICY SEASON 2023 –2024
HELMET POLICY Effective From 1st January 2024 Introduction and Details The Ballarat Cricket Association (BCA) maintain contacts with other similar cricket associations, Premier Cricket and Cricket Victoria. This may include Child Safety and other matters including player safety. It has come to the attention of the BCA that the rules relating to wicket keepers wearing helmets whilst keeping up to the stumps are not covered adequately in the BCA Senior Rules and Playing Conditions or the BCA Senior Women’s Rules and Playing Conditions. (note junior rules require wicket keepers to wear a helmet at all times and under 18 players playing in senior cricket must wear a helmet at all times) Cricket Australia, the premier authority for cricket in Australia has recommendations on the use of helmets in community cricket. BCA Rule 24 outlines the current rules for the wearing of helmets and are repeated below RULE 24 PROPER CRICKET ATTIRE 24.1 All players under the age of 18 participating in BCA competitions shall wear an approved BS7928:2013 compliant helmet when batting and wicket keeping at all times. Players aged 18 and above are not compulsorily required to wear a helmet while batting, however, the Ballarat Cricket Association strongly recommends all players do so to maximise personal safety and minimise the potential for head injury. PENALTY: Shall be dealt with under Rule 5 24.2 All players participating in BCA competitions shall wear an approved BS7928:2013 compliant helmet at all times when fielding in close. Fielding in close description as per CA - “(or in a zero-reaction time position) In elite cricket, a zero-reaction time position is considered any position within 7 metres of the batter except any position behind square on the off side - therefore, if fielding at silly mid-off or short-leg you would need to wear a helmet, whereas you would not if fielding at gully or (regulation) slip. PENALTY: Shall be dealt with under Rule 5 Policy for the Remainder of Season 2023 – 2024 including finals The use of protective helmets will be in line with Cricket Australia Community Cricket Recommendations. The Cricket Australia Guidelines are available at: https://play.cricket.com.au/community/clubs/managing-your-club/helmet-recommendations. Cricket Australia Community Cricket Recommendations Since 2019 CA has strongly recommended the use of British Standard BS7928:2013 helmets in community cricket when batting, wicket-keeping up to the stumps and fielding. The effect of this BCA policy for the remainder of the 2023 –2024 season is as follows: Rule 24.1 is amended to read 24.1 All players under the age of 18 participating in BCA competitions shall wear an approved BS7928:2013 compliant helmet when batting and wicket keeping at all times. In line with Cricket Australia policy players aged 18 and above are strongly recommended to wear a an approved BS7928:2013 compliant helmet while batting in all BCA competitions and at training to maximise personal safety and minimise the potential for head injury. PENALTY: Shall be dealt with under Rule 5 Rule 24.2 is unchanged 24.2 All players participating in BCA competitions shall wear an approved BS7928:2013 compliant helmet at all times when fielding in close. PENALTY: Shall be dealt with under Rule 5 New Policy regarding Wicket Keepers for the remainder of season 2023 - 2024 In the interests of player safety, the BCA board has decided to adopt the Cricket Australia policy that all wicket keepers when keeping up to the stumps in all BCA senior men’s and women’s competitions and at training are strongly recommended to wear an approved BS7928:2013 compliant helmet. Note: This policy will go through the usual end of season rules changes process and become rule 24.3 |

Ballan Cricket Club welcomes and congratulates two popular members of our club into the most senior roles of President and Senior coach. Firstly in the President Role is David Leach who started playing for Ballan in 2019. David joined our general committee last year and has also been looking after our U11 teams along with Jenny Bates. He always puts his hand up to help out where he can including as Rec Reserve Rep. Not only is David great behind the scenes he is also well represented on the field and continues to play well with our 2nd XI. A well respected member of the club David is very approachable and should do well. He taking the reins from Noel Heafield who decided to step down to Vice President this year after 4 seasons as President. The Senior Coach role has been filled by Mark Kennedy. Again a very popular club member and 1sts player who, as David has, joined us in 2019 and been on the committee from last season. Mark is keen to do well with the boys and wants the team to support each other throughout the season and through individual games whilst enjoying the game. Mark has played for Ballan with 42 matches to his name as a top order batsman and a handy lower order bowler as well as being super keen in the field. We wish them both the best for the current and upcoming seasons. 2021/22 BCA U13 2 XI Premiers
