Ballan and Buninyong’s round three clash will form part of the Mullagh Wills Foundation’s Journey to the G celebrations.
The two teams lock horns in the Ballarat Cricket Association seconds competition, with the two-day encounter kicking off on Sunday.
The Mullagh Wills Foundation was created to celebrate the Aboriginal side of the 1860s, including its 1866 Boxing Day match against the Melbourne Cricket Club, as well as the first Australian side to tour England in 1868. The foundation also focuses on the star of that team Johnny Mullagh and its original coach Tom Wills.
Ballan and Buninyong players and club members will be invited to sign a book that includes messages from the journey. The book, which was presented to the Mullagh Wills Foundation committee and West Wimmera Shire Council in March, is currently held by the Moorabool Shire as it makes its way to the MCG for Boxing Day.
Each municipality along the route has been invited to pass a formal motion of reconciliation and support of the Aboriginal team.
A representative from the committee will present a trophy to the winning side at the conclusion of Ballan and Buninyong’s two-day match on Saturday, November 12.
Ballan lost last weekend’s round two clash against Golden Point, while Buninyong, the reigning premiers, defeated Coronet City.

U13's Ballan supporters were treated to a couple of very close matches on the semi final weekend. Some would say too close and not that good for the old ticker. Our U13's had a good win to progress forward to the Grand Final next week against East Ballarat Gold, possibly at Russell Square (TBD) The boys , on day one, got the score to 121 with a couple of good totals by; Daniel Pascoe 50 ret, Cody Gates 39. Day 2 saw Matt Golding 25 retired hurt, Macca Popple 16 and George Muir on 12. The game came down to the last 2 overs with Ballarat/Redan needing 1 wicket ( so they say, not counting retirements.) and Ballan needing a couple of runs. Ballan came to the fore by getting the required runs and sealing the game in the 2nd last over. The best of our bowlers was James Childs with 2/20 of his 4 overs and also taking a catch. George Muir, Kobe Heafield and Tom Cox all took 1 wicket each. A great job by all of the boys with their fielding and backing up working well. One Day C Grade Our 2nd's side weren't quite as lucky, missing out on the Grand Final due to ladder position. Their game was closer than the U13's and actually couldn't get any closer ending in a tie. Not something that you see very often let alone in a final. Mt Clear lost a couple of early wickets but had a 4th wicket partnership of 99 to steady the ship. The bowlers spread the wickets with Rob Lindsey opening and getting 2/34, John McDaid 2/38, KB 1/34 and Jason McEgan 2/28. Jason was also on a hat trick and his second wicket was actually part of a team hat trick. Ballan lost their first 4 wickets with the score below 35. Captain Rob Lindsey opened the batting and was going steadily until a mix up occurred and he was run out on 32 . Roger Taylor then had to take up the challenge as the pressure was on after a partnership of 33 with Rob. He then got himself out on 42 to give Ballan a slight chance. Adam scored a solid 32 with 2 sixes and 3 fours ( beats running!) amassing 44 with Evan Shaw. Next in was Michael Vallance (KB) and, finally getting off the duck, worked hard with Evan. Some quick running and some risky running the boys pegged back the required total to need 2 runs to win with the last 3 balls. 1 run to tie. KB on strike couldn't get bat to ball for the first 2 balls but got the 3rd one and scored only one run to tie the match. A great effort considering halfway through the innings it looked like they had no chance. Funny game this cricket. Evan was almost spent with his effort and got his highest ever score of 45 not out, he only hit 3 fours and had to run the rest. Just as well KB is a terrier with his running just to keep up with Evan. KB got his best score as well with 22 not out. A tie wasn't enough to progress to the Grand Final but a good effort regardless. All the best for the U13's next week. Try to get there to support them. Ranieri family helps steers Ballan One Day C Grade to victory
Coronet City batted first and posted a fairly healthy total of 5/204 cc with Glenn Easterbrook and Adam Trickey taking 2 wickets each with Roger Taylor pitching in with one wicket. Justin Cameron and Rob Lindsey opened the batting with Rob dismissed with Ballan at 11 runs and Justin lasting until the score was 42. Ballan's father and son combination of Mark and Riley Ranieri , then, put on a partnership of 46 runs ,steadying the side. Mark, returning, after 5 years, to help out the team had not lost any of his skills as he went on the attack hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes to give him a total of 38. Seems hitting boundaries is a lot easier than running between wickets. It would have been a great experience for both Mark and Riley to have batted together at senior level for the first time. Not to be outdone by his father, Riley continued on with two more partnerships. One of 26 with Roger Taylor ( 20 ) and one with Jason McEgan (22) of 84 runs. He was hitting just a bit more than Mark as he scored 87 not out with 11 fours and 6 sixes. This was Riley's highest ever score with his previous being 53 not out with the U14's and u16's. These junior scores could have been much higher except for compulsory retirements at 50. Riley opened the bowling ,as well, going wicket-less with 0/19 off 7 overs. Peter McDaid and Jeremy McKenzie also made a comeback to help out the team, whilst Evan Shaw stepped up also. All three of the recalled players took one catch each along with Riley taking one. Nice 6 Akka.
Pity about Mum's car though. The 14th of January game was against Coronet City at Ballarat High School Turf, which was supposed to be a Ballan home game and got switched on Thursday night. Even the umpire went to Ballan as he didn't get told either. Ryan Aquilina put on a quickfire 35 including several 6's along with a good partnership of 48 ( almost half the total score) with Ash Mullane who top scored with 40. Ryan and Ash put some respectability back in the game after an early collapse with the top order with 5 wickets for under 30 runs. They helped bring Ballan to the total of 100 all out. Terrible pitch conditions were the main blame for the low score as it was very green and damp with the ball almost plugging in the pitch. Bounce was inconsistent (tennis ball bounce and skidding) and the ball was leaving dents all over the place. Ballan's bowling kept them in the game with the awkward pitch conditions. Most of our bowlers chipped in with a wicket or 2. Alex Cairns picked up another 3/8 with Hayden Micalleff getting 2/16. Ballan were unable to peg the opposition back enough to go down by 2 wickets with only a couple of overs to go. Buninyong & Ballarat/Redan withdraw from 1 Day C Grade competition
Dear Club Administrators, The Pennant Committee have received notification from the Buninyong and Ballarat-Redan Cricket Clubs intent to withdraw teams from the competition. Both Clubs have now been removed from the 1 Day C Grade competition leaving 7 teams remaining. For this round of matches changes have been made to the fixture in MyCricket without affecting the home and away scheduling, rather Coronet City now face Naps-Sebas instead of Ballarat-Redan and Buninyong accordingly. Changes to the remaining fixture will occur in the next day or so with every attempt to keep it all aligned with other teams/venues/byes etc as best possible. I’m sure it won’t worry too many out there but I’m just letting everyone know now to give everyone the best chance to find out as early as possible. Ballan fared well at the BCA Junior Association awards held at the Buninyong club-rooms last night (20/3/17) with Dylan Graham picking up the BCA best under 16 1st XI cricketer for 2016/2017. Dylan's season consisted of ; 397 runs at an average of 49.63, 14 wickets for 207 off 51.5 overs with a best of 5/2 and he also took 5 catches with 1 run out. Dylan's highest score was 100 not out due to compulsory retirement. Daniel Pascoe also did well placing 3rd in the Under 13 Spratling competition. Daniel's figures included; 304runs @ 60.8 average, 10/99 off 33.2 overs giving an average of 9.9, took 4 catches, 1 stumping and 1 assisted run out. His highest score was 55 not out with compulsory retirement at 50 meaning he hit a 6 off his last ball. Congratulations to Dylan and Daniel for the great work representing the Ballan Cricket Club. ![]() Tyler Trickey
212 not out One day C grade spectators were treated to a spectacle of hard hitting at Ballan on Saturday the 25th. As Tyler Trickey opened the batting with Rob Lindsey. The hard hitting is usually expected with Tyler's batting style (all or nothing) There were six notable partnerships during the innings and Tyler was a major part of all of them as he batted for the full 40 overs. The first partnership with Rob (17) was 71 followed by ; 64 with Justin Cameron(9), 33 with Sam Dehnert (9), 40 with Roger Taylor (6), 44 with Evan Shaw and ending with 21 with his father Adam (7). Tyler's innings consisted of 15 fours and 19 sixes , a total of 174 in boundaries leaving 38 that were run between the wickets. Ballan ended their innings 6 wickets down setting Darley a total of 280 to chase . Darley lost an early wicket after only 18 runs but the next batsmen got off to a steadying start with D Hynes 46 and T Gallagher 58. A valiant effort by the Darley batsmen finishing on 8/214 ( just 2 runs more than Tyler made) at stumps giving Ballan a victory. Not to be totally outdone by his son, Adam picked up 3/19 off six overs with Tyler, opening, and getting 1/42 himself. Other wicket takers for Ballan were Rob Lindsey 2/22 and Sam Dehnert 2/36 Ballan Cricket Club
